Valetta

12 March 2004

As the weather wasn't exactly sunbathing weather a few of us decided to check out the shopping and sites of Valetta - Malta's capital.

The bus cost 15 cents - bus is the best way to travel in Malta as it's very cheap easy and Malt's buses have become a bit of a tourist attraction in themselves.

The old city is enclosed by city walls and the entrance is through a city gate.

The streets were lovely and narrow giving the city a real island feel. Unfortunately the photo's or maybe the photographer didn't really do them justice.

Roz and Jeanie were our shop-a-holics so while they bargin hunted, Anne and I visited St John's Co-Cathedral (don't know why it's 'co' cathedral). Generally I'd say I'm cathedraled out now but this one's worth a visit. It has wonderful paintings and highly decorative carved stone walls. There seemed to be a fascination with skulls and cross bones, which adorned many of the floor grave markings.

After a coffee stop Julia, Jeneane, Anne and I left the others to their shopping and strolled to the Grand harbour, one of the world's largest and deepest natural harbours, to see some lovely views of the fort like city. Defense was obviously very important to the Maltese.

Horse and cart's were found all over the island offering tourists "very low" prices which we declined but it looked like fun, I particularly liked this view of them all lined up along the street.

Meeting back up with the shoppers we lunched at a famous restaurant Cafe Cordina, sitting outside in the lovely sunshine. Inside the building had high arching ceiling which were beautifully decorated. The waiter gave us a postcard to remember it by.

The shoppers had been hampered by siesta so we waited for a few shops to reopen then went home to prepare for our night out.
