Netball in Malta13 March 2004We got off to a bit of a false start when the bus driver dropped us off at a nunnery. You should of seen the poor nun at the door's face when 45 woman were descending on her convent. Luckily english is widely spoken on the island so it was back on the bus and around to corner to the school where we were meant to be. The morning programme was to play the London teams in a friendly round robin with the Maltese teams turning up for an afternoon competition. Barclay's Capital had an abundance of players so I played for Tussock - a predominately NZ team. This meant I got to play all the games and also played in GS and GA. Unfortunately the team was more of a social side with some newbies so wins didn't flow thick and fast, but we did claw out a draw in one game and kept close in other games. The Maltese were quite worried about us - so much so that they sent their National A and B team along with some area and age group champion teams to play us. With a tight time schedule we only got to play very short games, luckily for us I think as the scores were more flattering after only 10 minutes. We only lost by 2 goals to the National A team so that was a great result. The Maltese were great through the court and in defence but their shooters lacked accuracy which cost them dearly. Barclay's Capital won the competition which was an excellent result, with only a draw holding them from a clean sweep of wins. Barclay's
Capital scoring another goal There weren't too many injuries and amazingly I was in one piece at the end of the day - apart from a bit of sunburn. I just like to make sure the sun screen works - and the best way to do that is to miss a few bits when you put it on. Exhausted we piled back on the bus for our quick trip home and naps before going out again. |
