Bellagio - Verona

10 April 2004

It was still raining when we woke up on Saturday morning although the mist had cleared a bit and we could see the snow on top of the mountains across the lake. Again what a view it would of been if it was sunny.

There was a waterfall at the back of the hotel so just before we left we went down to see it.

Then on the road again we drove up the mountain along the middle of the stretch of land between the two legs of the lake. The mist closed in a bit and there was snow on cars coming down the other way, after driving through so very cute villages and narrow roads we drove down to the right leg and followed it to Lenno.

There was a lot of traffic on the road and so it took about 3 hours to get to Verona but the sun came out along the way so that was a plus side. Our hotel Due Torri Hotel Baglioni was the one hotel that was a bit tricky to find as although I had a map of the city it didn't show the one-way networks, and with such narrow roads we ended up driving around the maze of blue arrows for a bit before we managed to come the right way down the street. I was looking forward to this hotel as it was a 5 star and I'd got a bit of a deal over the Internet. It was a 13th Century building that Beethoven once stayed in.

Our room was really cool - you know you're somewhere flash when the wall coverings are material. It had antique bedside tables and a large antique wardrobe. It reminded me of the many palaces we had visited but we got to sleep the night in this one.

Verona was everything I hoped it would be... it's no surprise to me now that there is a balcony in Romeo and Juliet as there are balconies and shuttered windows everywhere. The buildings are all painted in pale marble type colours.

We spent the afternoon shopping as it would be the only chance we got with Easter closures.

Verona's arena is hardly a ruin at all which is amazing as it was built 1AD and it was neat to see it and imagine how the Roman coliseum would of looked.

That evening we ate in the hotel and as there were only two other guests we had a very pleasant evening again with some fantastic food and wine.

Next - Verona to Bologna
