York

August 27 - August 30, 1999

The last bank holiday of the year and we decided to take a trip up north to York. We stayed in the Novotel which was luxury.

We went for a wander around the town and came across the beautiful York Minster. It is definitely one of the more spectacular buildings we’ve come across. Here it is from the front. See further views of it.

Shopping was really different. It was like stepping back in time. The narrow cobbled streets, low doors, it was really neat.

On Sunday I went to the York Viking centre. It was quite well set out. On Sunday I went to the York Viking centre. It was quite well set out. You went on a ride around a built up replica village then around the back was the actual excavations showing specific sites. It’s like a living exhibit as the excavations are continuing.

I made my own Viking coin. The way they used to by smashing a hammer onto a mould over my piece of metal. Quite fun.

Here’s a Viking toilet. Not very private.

Late that after noon we took a boat tour down the River Ouse. It wasn’t that good as it only showed us the town and didn’t go any further. Here you can see the guild hall, a gate house and a church.

OOHHH! Are you scared? I was on the Ghost walk we did that night. OOHHH! Are you scared? I was on the Ghost walk we did that night. The guide was great. As we walked around the city he told a story for each building. I was too scared to look up in the windows in case I saw something. He sent the kids down one alley and he ran down another then jumped out at the end and frightened the life out of them. It was very enjoyable.

Had enough gore? No not us so Monday morning off to the York Dungeon. It was actually quite gross showing old torture methods and diseases that struck. It was smelly and horrible.

We chose somewhere a little more sedate to finish our day. We went to the train museum. It was interesting to look at the switchboards that control the points and signalling. We also got to see the royal train suites. It was a huge spectacle.

Unfortunately as usual our weekend was over too quickly.
