Imperial War Museum

February 6, 2000

A day to myself found me at the Imperial War Museum.
There was plenty of machinery to look at in the main hall. I was most interested in..

Atomic Bomb - This is a replica of the bomb dropped on Hiroshima ending World War Two effectively. It was known as the 'Little boy'.

Rocket. This is one of the bombs that the Germans dropped on London during the Blitz in 1944. It travelled faster than sound and was impossible to intercept.

Submarine This is a German one man Biber submarine. These type of craft were never that successful as they were often developed hastily.

World War One was represented with a Trench experience. I was quite scared about going in it myself. But the effects were great. The layout was very easy to follow taking you through each part of the war, showing relevant artefacts. I had a chance to experience the Blitz during World War Two. We sat in a simulation of a bomb shelter then walked through the ruined street. Again it was very well done.

Some images were quite scary, such as these children. This school boy is wearing a standard issue Gas mask. These children were probably among the thousands that were evacuated from London during the second World War.

The museum is currently holding a code breaking exhibition. It was quite fun breaking codes using the techniques gained from the war.

The whole museum really brings home the realities of war, but nothing more so than the Clock that counts deaths from war related incidents. It records two deaths per minute. This is a must see when visiting London.
