UP early
on Saturday morning to catch a Virgin Train to Liverpool to
win our fortune. Well that didnt quite happen. After stopping
off at the Hostel we went to one of the horse racing events
of the year. THE GRAND NATIONAL.
The programme
was actually very short, consisting of only six races. I had
a few warm up bets and the best I could do was placings. Then
the big race, I chose a horse after much studying. No really
I just liked the name. It was such a long way and we cold only
see a small part of the track but luckily we had a huge, bigger
than a truck, TV screen in front of us. I think probably less
than half the horses that started the race finished it. The
commentator didnt say my horses name until the second
time round the track. I thought it had gone down during the
many falls. But no, and it came into the straight in the lead,
but was overtaken and I received a second again. Not bad considering
the odds of the horse actually finishing the race, let alone
getting a placing. Quite a cruel race actually.
We then
hit the town without the expected proceeds of the days outing.
We went to a few places and ended up at the Cavern, the pub
where the Beatles played 290 times. It was really groovy. We
later found out that the actual club was torn down and is now
a carpark, but this is an exact replica right next to the carpark.
Close enough for me.
Sunday was
a chance to see a few sights. We walked around the docks, Liverpools
origin. There was a floating weather map, that the weather person
used to do the weather from, but it has fallen into disrepair.
We also
saw the beautiful Port of Liverpool building. The Port of Liverpool
building was particularly striking. Well what do you think of
Gavin's effort? As good as the postcard?
I had to
take a photo of the famous Mersey River of course.
Liverpool has of course a couple of Cathedrals. These were built
at a similar time and as a result they strived to out better
each other. I actually like the gothic look of the Anglican
cathedral better than the modern Catholic symbol.
The Beatles
experience was just that. An experience! This attraction took
you through the early days and right to the present day. It
really illustrated the effect the Beatles had on the music scene
and that of fame. Its amazing they stayed together as long as
they did. Life after the Beatles was interesting; one member
is Thomas the tank engine narrator. There was a beautiful tribute
room to John Lennon completely in white with Imagine playing.
It was really peaceful.
