Lewes

May 1, 1999

For the first long weekend of the year we decided to get away from it all and find a nice quiet spot. We were very successful. Lewes is a lovely small village. It is situated on a hill and as you walk down the street you can see farm country in the distance.

We stayed in a lovely B&B. It was 16 century and our room was divine. It had an awesome 4-poster bed.

The streets were narrow and steep as you can see from this photo.

Lewes castle was more a defence point than a grand residence. The views were amazing. The staircases were scary.

This 15-century building is an antique bookshop. We had a great time fossicking around the old books. Unfortunately we both got a case of the sneezes from the dust.

We spent a relaxing afternoon here in the Southover Gardens. As you can see they were just beautiful.

It’s not far to the coast from Lewes, so we had two day trips. One to Seaford and the second to Brighton.

Seaford was even smaller than Lewes. The weather was gorgeous. We spent quite a lot of time at the beach. The beach was not a sandy version, but covered in stones. They were actually quite comfortable once you wiggled your way in. We had such a lazy day but it was exactly what I was after.
