Teaching

1997 - 2000

Waikato University from 1993 to 1996 and I was qualified with a Bach of Education and a Diploma of teaching.

Teaching was in my blood really. Its where a lot of my life's decisions had lead me to. With both my mother and aunty working in a school in other roles I became the first teacher of the family.

My first job was at Hangatiki School, near Otorohanga. With a class of only 16 7 and 8 year olds, it was always going to be the perfect start. They were a lovely bunch of children.

Unfortunately the diminishing numbers of the school meant that my position was only going to be for a year. Luckily I secured a position at Goodwood School in Cambridge.

I learnt a lot from the wonderful teachers there. They installed professionalism and versatility in me. Again my class were lovely. Teaching Year 1 and 2 helped realise that this age group was my strength.

1998 saw me travel to England for the big OE. Always easier for teachers as there were so many positions. The first six months I spent time learning about schools and procedures by supply teaching in various areas of London, from East, to South and then West.

In June I took a six week contract in Chiswick and Bedford Preparatory school. Yes a private school. I had a class of 18 angels. I really enjoyed working there as my duties included going to sports on a Thursday afternoon with the Year 4, 5, and 6 girls. I also taught Art to the Year 5 girls and took the Year 1 class on a Friday afternoon. My class were Reception age and so had Wednesday and Friday afternoons off.

Edward Betham COE school was my first real English class. Again I was blessed with a great staff to work with. They were always supportive and positive towards my work. Yet again I had a class of angels. I have been very lucky in my teaching career.

At the end of the school year I made a decision based on government bureaucracy to take a step sideways and move into the Web industry. I certainly miss my kids, but am recovery some sanity. I think I'm qualified in saying teaching is one of the most emotional and difficult jobs in the world.

Read about my classes and some of the links I found invaluable.
